Fabulous Lady in the Comics Section
Aug. 11th, 2004 10:21 pmThis is an appreciation of the woman whose name I've already forgotten. I remember your outfit because I'm good with clothes: red skirt, short jacket, turquoise flower pin, chin length hair. It was an outfit that made it clear that the wearer was fashionable, yet low key. Someone intelligent enough to present themselves well but far too sensible to make a big production of it.
Monday afternoon I was killing time at lunch, looking at graphic novels in Borders, and ended up talking with this well-dressed woman for half an hour, swapping stories of fan-boys, strange convention experiences, and other misadventures common to being a woman in that strange realm often known as fandom. She made some very astute recommendations to me about comics I hadn't yet read. We agreed on the goodness of a number of comics we both loved. I discovered that she wrote comics, but along with her name I have forgotten exactly what indie comic she wrote, though I know the name began with Blue.
It was just one of those fortuitous encounters. My mood had been gray and heavy like half a hangover or an interrupted nightmare all morning, and I spent the afternoon half a breath from a giggle, high on serendipity. So this is a thank you to that lady, even if I have forgotten your name already. Thank you very much for a fabulous conversation.
