Yay, comics spending goodness!
Jan. 9th, 2006 08:50 pmI had a money spending weekend. A big splurge for me, which means a total of, I think, 70 dollars including food and coffee. Went down to Letizia's Natural Bakery in Wicker Park and had sandwiches and coffee. Still a really excellent cafe but we have noticed a bit of a pare-down in their sandwiches - slightly smaller and slightly less stuffed. Which means they are now a human eatable size, instead of a "lunch and takehome dinner" size, so I guess I really shouldn't kvetch.
Then walked over to Brainstorm comics and spent an enjoyable half hour talking to the staff there, kind of picking their brains about comics for the younger teen set (since much as I love Preacher, Hellblazer, and Transmetropolitan, the DC Vertigo line is "suggested for mature readers" and I'm trying to get a handle on stuff that is more appropriate for 13 yr olds. Since as a teen my mom signed a release form and let me read whatever adult comics I wanted, I never spent much time reading the more mainstream, all ages titles and am catching up now).
Then we went over to Quimby's bookstore and checked out some zines and alternative press magazines, and I bought another issue of Lady Churchhill's Rosebud Wristlet.
Other purchases: Machine Teen, a younger-audience Marvel title graphic novel. Cute sort of cyborg/action story. The latest antho of Fables, a DC Vertigo title all about fairy tale characters that I love - excellent urban fantasy. A single issue of Fallen Angel, which was a DC title and has now moved to a publisher I'd never heard of called IDC. The new series run is all-painted, which looks great but does mean more $ per issue. And of course various freebies such as ComicsNews. I kinda like that little newspaper leaflet.
Still angsting about "Why aren't I a fabulously successful adult professional already", but that's just par for these pre-transition periods I suppose. Looking forward to Laurell K Hamilton's next, coming out in February. And going to a bookgroup this weekend to discuss "To Say Nothing of the Dog" by the swell Connie Willis. Also staffing an Independent Film Series at the Lincoln Belmont branch of the CPL with the Friends of the Library there. So busy-ish I suppose.
