I woke up from one of those dreams that isn't exactly a nightmare, but clearly communicates to you that either a) you ate something you really shouldn't have last night, or b) your subconscious has been having a really interesting conversation and you were just treated to the badly mimeographed cliff notes thereof (not even photocopied - weren't mimeographs the odd purple reproductive things with the distinctive odor?).
So the author who is appropriate here is Jennifer Michael Hecht, the poet.
The poem I wanted most to quote is called loneliness, because it has a line about how "the phone rings in the middle of the night/ It is you again, it is always you."
But a) that doesn't seem to be quite the right sentiment after all, and b) I think I can link you to some full text poems of hers, at a poetry website called the No-Tell Motel (http://www.notellmotel.org/).
So check out the poem "Gorilla in a Darkening Room"
