Thing that's maybe a novel
Jan. 10th, 2007 02:55 pmThe thing that's maybe a novel is now at about 22,400 words. I'm about 1/3 of the way through the 2nd day of the story in the novel - I picture it being about a week (in storytime) total. An ugly week for everyone involved. Limiting it to one week and one city is my way of acknowledging what classical Elizabethan theater critics would have called "the unities of time and place".
The 2nd day is so far kinda lacking in dead bodies. I mean, other than the dead body that our heroine is about to find in a trunk at the warehouse. But we sorta already know about that dead body - I mean, it's lacking in fresh dead bodies. I better figure out somebody to kill off soon.
The first day, three people died, at least.
Maybe there'll be a compensatory bloodbath on the next day of the novel? Anyway, this day just has: fights, spells, bribery, visits to warehouses (where dead bodies are stashed), discoveries of illegal religious texts that could get some people burned, and some other stuff TBD.
How do I feel about all this? Pretty good, right now. Today's writing was short (Mostly transcribed from notes I took) but it added two firm plot connections. Time to go shelve books for the evening. I let myself have way too much fun with the dialogue in the bribery scene - I suspect it will all have to be scrapped on revision, because that kind of phrasing only really entertains me.
