Why does the literary fiction world so dislike genre writing?  Because I was reading Ms. Hamilton's blog today (http://blog.laurellkhamilton.org/), the March 31 entry.  And she talks about being kicked out of a writing program that had accepted her knowingly as a horror writer, because she was causing the other people to write genre, rather than being converted to litfic herself.

Which reminded me of something I'd read in the Wyrdsmith's blog last summer (http://wyrdsmiths.blogspot.com/2006_08_01_archive.html), the August 21st, 2006 entry.  And I was like, ack.

The reason why genre writers go to all the trouble to have genre writing workshops like Clarion is here made rather clear.  I actually think I took a creative writing class from the same professor discussed in the Wyrdsmith's post.  I recall that he announced in the first class session that genre stories in any genre would be unacceptable class submissions.  SInce that hadn't been in the class sign up materials and I already knew I only wanted to write genre, I was left a bit confused.  I did my best and sorta passed the class, but it wasn't any fun.

I just had to bite my tongue on a whole still inchoate rant I've got in my head about how this has to do with class issues and feminist issues and a whole slew of other things that could end in "ism".
