New Year's Tradition
Dec. 31st, 2007 08:13 pmEvery year I go out at midnight from whatever event I'm at and read Tennyson's "Ring Out, Wild Bells". I think it's from In Memoriam, A. H. H., but I could be wrong. It's excerpted places. It's up at Project Gutenberg in at least one collection (In this collection, among others).
There are bits about religion that I don't totally agree with, but verses like this just really speak to me:
"Ring out false pride in place and blood,
The civic slander and the spite;
Ring in the love of truth and right,
Ring in the common love of good."
And who doesn't want "the larger heart, the kindlier hand"? So, best wishes to you all in the New Year.
