Nov. 9th, 2008

I spent most of today, on and off, beating the suck out of a chapter with a large stick.  It was pretty fun.  I took a static, bizarre chapter that had mixed motives and strained dialog, and ran it past two friends for thematic advice.  Then I called up two other friends with black belts for action scene staging advice.  Then I rewrote it twice, scrapping pretty much every word of the original chapter.  I did that silly author thing where you're walking back and forth across the room muttering under your breath as you rehearse fights against an invisible opponent.  The people playing cards in my living room laughed at me. :-)

Other than that, a mix of fun and work related reading today.  I read the rest of Jennifer Rardin's 4th Jaz Parks book, Bitten to Death.  I've enjoyed the whole series so far - fast paced action, lots of weapons and brooding sexual tension.  The narrator's voice is rich in metaphor and humor, and the action scenes are consistently over the top.

I read a story by Josh Lanyon that I really enjoyed, and I think as soon as I figure out where I put my PayPal account passwords, I'll buy something else of his to read.  I've been intrigued since a Dear Author review, but I'm definitely sold now.  Of course, I've had a weakness for m/m stories with lots of romance since I was a young teen reading nifty.org.

I read part of a Children's Literature textbook on loan from a coworker (the chapters on picture books).  And I read a few chapters from a new Christian-oriented non fiction book for young adults (Do Hard Things by Alex and Brett Harris) that I'm skimming for work-related reading.  The new edition of American Libraries came into my mailbox and I skimmed through that, too. (I always start from the back.  I find most magazines more enjoyable if read backward, I don't know why.)

I also ran 2.3 miles, lifted weights, and visited some friends, so I'm feeling full of virtue.  Though I didn't clean anything, which would have made it an even more useful day.
