Book meme! Day 8
Jul. 28th, 2010 10:43 pmDay 08 - A book everyone should read at least once
When I think of books that everyone should read at least once, I mostly think of nonfiction (or graphic novels), with qualifiers.
F'r'example:
Everyone who loves the English language with a ridiculously unrequited passion should read The Stories of English by David Crystal.
Everyone who loves 1950s humor books and wants to fake their way through the Shakespeare part of their high school English curriculum should read Twisted Tales from Shakespeare by Richard Armour (if you can find a copy - you can't have my dad's, I've got dibs).
Everyone who loves Greek philosophy and post-modern poetry should read Anne Carson; I vote for Eros the Bittersweet even though it's not poetry because it is excellent.
Everyone who has a bent for the academic and has ever gotten in trouble for writing in a borrowed book should read Marginalia: Readers Writing in Books by H. J. Jackson.
Everyone who loves feminism and sarcastic humor leavened with compassion should try Cynthia Heimel's columns and/or Alison Bechdel's Dykes to Watch Out For cartoons.
