Book meme! Day 12
Aug. 3rd, 2010 12:17 amDay 12 - A book or series of books you’ve watched more than five times
The only 5-book-plus series I can think of where I'm sure I've read each book in the series more than 5 times all the way through is The Chronicles of Amber. I started in the middle, which I enjoyed a lot - my dad brought me home The Courts of Chaos one day because he liked the title. I was in middle school when the last two came out, and read those as they came out. I got a copy of the first issue of Realms of Fantasy because it had an Amber story in it.
I think Merlin is a much more entertaining character than Corwin, and I think the last 5 books are best read as early cyberpunk. I find the awkward Merlin / Luke dynamic more compelling than Corwin's problems with Eric.
But I like all 10, really, and they blend together seamlessly, and just a few sentences of the prose and narrative voice sucks me right under.
When I was 10 and living in Hawai'i my best friend M. and I used to take turns checking the Amber books out of the library over and over and reading them. I think I loved the symbology - the cards and swords and flowers, cups of blood and mazes. Silver roses, unicorns, shadow kingdoms in the sky and beneath the sea. And the brooding characters with huge emotional blind spots.
