Book meme! Day 22
Aug. 31st, 2010 08:57 pmDay 22 - Favorite non-sexual relationship (including asexual romantic relationships)
I think maybe at the moment this would be Rachel and Ivy in the Kim Harrison series that starts with Dead Witch Walking. Though perhaps the sexual tension that occasionally exists between them disqualifies this, I really love reading about two people who are good friends in that intimate, everyday way, and who have huge emotional time investments in that friendship, and who struggle with it just as intimately as lovers would.
Because I do think that maintaining friendships can be serious work, and while I love a buddy caper as much as the next person fiction tends to show us a lot of friendships that are either totally free of problems or else have problems caused by deliberate deception or ill will. The day to day back and forth of two people whose problems are real but not caused by failures to talk or deliberate malice is really refreshing.
I'm also awfully fond of Peabody and Eve in the Nora Roberts / J D Robb "In Death" series - even though their friendship is completely free of real problems it charms me anyway because I like their banter.
