Book meme! Day 9
Jul. 29th, 2010 08:32 amDay 09 - Best scene ever (spoilers for Cyrano de Bergerac ahoy, if you care)
In Cyrano de Bergerac when he hauls himself, like an idiot, off to visit Roxanne despite the concussion that is fatal if he gets up and could easily be recovered from by a weekend in bed [what kind of weird concussion this is I don't know but the plot assures us it is so] because he can't miss even one visit to her [I think this is phenomenally ridiculously stupid because by dying he's going to miss all those future weekend visits which is surely much more heinous than missing just one, but it's ok with me because Cyrano clearly knows what an idiot he's being, he always knows and can't help himself and that is tragedy right there] and he knows he's dying so he betrays himself, just a little [I think it's sort of on purpose through moral weakness, though the play wants you to think it's accidental when the light fails] and so she finally knows he loves her. And she says all this time those were your words. And he says - yes, but it was his blood. And you want to beat him and get him a therapist and teach him about this crazy thing called agency that women have too in relationships if you're not manipulating them and lying to them and protecting them from your big nose.
But also you love him just a little because even though Christian was kind of a twit you get that Cyrano grew to love him too. Love him perhaps for Roxanne's sake but love just the same.
