Nov. 19th, 2005

Well, my sedentary, non-ergonomic lifestyle has finally caught up with me. I used to be good about working out, with at least occasional forays into weightlifting, aikido, fencing...

And for the last two years, I at least made it to the gym sometimes. But this semester, with a demanding schedule of Cataloging (like math, only more random) and Youth Services (tons and tons and tons of reading), I haven't been making it to the gym at all.

The result seems to have been massive joint pain in my hips, and occasionally knees and ankles. I've been taking more vitamins and stretching every night and taking long walks at lunch and am starting to go to the gym again and the pain is going away. I also bought new and more supportive shoes and am trying to stand at work as much as possible instead of sitting behind my desk.
*sigh*
I'm only 25, I'm too young to creak when I stand up.

So I just thought I'd post about this not to whine but to invite comment from those of my friends out there (you know who you are) who pursue nice well-thought out physical maintenance - any suggestions on specific exercises to do/avoid? I think that a nice exercise plan can totally reverse stuff at this point, and I don't think my insurance covers physical therapy for joint pain as (relatively) minor as I'm experiencing.

Grateful for any insight here
