Nov. 25th, 2005

It's traditional to take time on Thanksgiving to give thanks. Most of my time on Thanksgiving was devoted to whipping cream, overeating, and laying around on the fold-out futon watching Roger Rabbit. So I thought I would take time to give thanks now instead.

These aren't all recent thanks, there's some old ones.

I'm thankful to J., my husband, for buying me an office chair so that my butt doesn't go numb when I do my homework.
I'm thankful to my mom, who bought us tickets to Jamaica for Christmas (yay tropical island Christmas!).
I'm thankful to all my wonderful friends, who have generally helped knock sense in to me all my life without trying to make the process too painful, but especially to:
Zeke, for teaching me that people actually could think through their problems and act in consistent ways, and for the epigrams.
D.D., for giving up his afternoons for half a year or more to arguing the philosophy of trust and human behavior with me, which was a lot more beneficial for my life than he may have thought. And I liked the Foucault.
M.W., for reminding me it was ok to believe in things you actually do think are true, and for the general good times.
The owner of the used bookstore in Fremont in Seattle WA, who used to continue the nice work D.D. had begun, talking with me about politics and Assyrians every morning when I stopped in on my way to work. Also he's the one who sold me the Paul Hunter Mockingbird book.
J.M., for teaching me that I can have a good time without having to be so darned serious, and for the pinata, and a bunch of other stuff.
J.S., for teaching me that I did understand people better than I thought, even if I didn't always want to.
J.L., for introducing me to J., for hosting my wedding, and for letting me call him with the strangest questions about cars, guns, and fight scenes whenever I'm working on a story.
S.D., for caring about Kierkegaard, and for knowing the difference between Wicca and Witchcraft, among other things.
L.M., for having a goal in life, so that I know it's ok to try for something bigger than what I've got.

There's a bunch of others, but those were the ones that were on my mind this weekend. It's amazing to think how many people put their time and energy into helping people out, even when there's clearly nothing in it for them.

All best to everyone on the holiday. If you're abstaining from Turkey Day festivities, or celebrating National Buy Nothing Day, or whatever, I hope it was fulfilling.
