I am so happy.
I was stressing out about how to figure out how to make little round edged boxes that would look cute, as per our Paint created layout idea, and have them be CSS/XHTML happy, with little link lists in them.

And then I realized - it is totally ok to have a background-image in your div.
Answer - make the little boxes .gifs.
Insert them as background images in the appropriate divs.
Size the divs so they are the same size as the outermost dimensions of the cute little background images.
Everything is happy.

As far as I can figure out this should be totally compliant. Of course, I may ask our prof or run it through the validator and discover otherwise.

Pardon me while I do a little happy dance (I was trying to figure out how to force the little div boxes to generate me round edged borders, and I couldn't for the life of me imagine how to do it. My theory is that it isn't something that happens. Borders is square, end of story. But it's just a theory.)

This is me doing the CSS happy dance again. Bonus goodness - if someone doesn't like the little colored box in the background, all they have to do is make a new colored box of same dimensions and switch that line or two in style sheet. Whammo, whole new look for the little divs! yayayayayay!
