I actually finished the rough draft of my first fantasy novel (well, the first one I *finished*. .. I used to write about one a year in my composition books in grade school, but I never finished those).

I have friends who will do the initial read through for wildly boring and/or improbable parts, and then, umm, I think I'll try the submission process.  I've read so much about that, so this will be an exciting new adventure.  (See, I'm writing that part in public on the high of finishing the rough draft, so it will be written and posted and untake-backable by the time the crash hits during rewrites).

It's like, a 100,000 word thing about an ex-assassin who is blackmailed into investigating a murder and finds herself caught up in the tangled threads of three different political plots.  With ghosts and slave rebellions and dead bodies and prostitutes and drug dealing rings and arson and rioting and parades.

Lots of skulking in alleys and secret tunnels and duels between family members and ancient blood-worked spells and stuff like that.  Set in a world very loosely based on Restoration England (dude, international piracy!  black and white slavery!  theater as politics and politics as theater!  what's not to love about Restoration England?).  I read tons of 1600s history, both English and international, though I don't think much of the research shows.  Because close first person viewpoint in a chronically detached person who's seriously sleep deprived and keeps getting attacked = not much analysis of bigger picture political and historical threads.  And I didn't make any efforts yet towards historically appropriate language, as I'm not really sure what that is when you're making up a ton of the history.

Time to stop reading history and start reading more Dryden, Aphra Behn, and all the other names from my Restoration Dramatists crit books.  That's to hopefully help the tone of dialogue on revision.

Then I get to start writing the YA rough draft - contemporary superhero stuff, way easier to research.

Ok, one more time to get it out of my system - I actually FINISHED  a whole draft of a novel, finally!  Yay.
*ahem*  I'm done now.  (goes off to get ready to work at library)
